Pumpkins!

To celebrate October 31st, we gave 2 pumpkins a bath. We were trying to see if the pumpkin would float and most people thought it would sink. To our surprise the pumpkin didn’t sink, but it floated! We decided the pumpkin floats because it has air inside.

Next, we measured how tall and big it was. Then, Ms. Hill cut it open and we had to count ALL the seeds. Using little cups we counted the seeds by groups of ten. Then we put ten groups together into hundreds. The first pumpkin had 511 seeds and the second pumpkin had 407 seeds. (I wonder how much that is altogether?)

Last, we washed the seeds, roasted them in the oven, and had them for a snack.

What a pumpkin-licious day!

A Leaf Man’s got to go Where the Wind Blows…

In class, we read the book A Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. (Nolan and Bryan) The last page said “Maybe you’ll find a leaf man waiting to go home with you.” (Kylie) So we went outside to pick leaves and find our own leaf man. (Maria)

We picked leaves of all different colors, sizes, and shapes. (Kamea and Heather) We were surprised when we found a tree with humongous leaves. (Keyshuwn) Back in the class, we dumped our bags of leaves and sorted them. (Brian R. and Tiffany) We used field guides to help us research what type of tree the leaf came from. (Olivia)  We learned the BIG ones are from the catalpa tree. (Ayana)

Later, by putting the leaves together, we created our own “Leaf men”. (Matthew) It was fun! (Sam) Here are some pictures to show you. (Kamea)

Mini Meteorologists Making Forecasts

We are meterologists learning about the weather in Alaska, Kenya, Hawaii, and Mexico. (Jordan, Peter, Heather, Tifffany, and Bryan)  Our class used the laptops to find out the temperature, the wind speed, and the average precipitation. (Keyshuwn). We are making maps of the states and countries (Kylie). We also watched weather videos. (Nicareo) Our class is going to get ready for videotaping our forecasts. (Sabinne) They will soon be up on our blog!

Hey second graders! I’ve missed being in class, but I am learning how to create, edit, and upload video and audio files. This will be powerful for projects this year. Check out my video message! :)
