Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Stop?
Hello friends,
Well we sure enjoyed playing in the snow. You would think that a five day weekend would have been the best thing ever, but we find that we are really happy to be back in school. I’m sure you already know this, but no two snow flakes are alike and we think that is cool. The weatherman says we are supposed to get more snow tomorrow. So we may get another chance to check and see if that is really true. It would be really hard to look at every single snowflake, but it could be really fun!

It’s 2010 already!
Happy New Year! We can hardly believe that is a brand new year – a brand new decade even! We are excited about new adventures and opportunities that lie ahead of us this year. We are finishing up our “How-To” books and we hope to post them soon. Right now in math we are learning about symmetry. Here is a picture of a symmetrical design we made with pattern blocks.

Happy Holidays
We had a fantastic time at our class breakfast on Friday morning. Thank you for your generous support and delicious treats. It was an occasion enjoyed by all. We definitely enjoyed watching the delicate snowflakes falling down on Friday. It was a festive way to end school f0r 2009. Have a restful and delightful holiday with family and friends. Take time to share, bake, reflect on the past year, and read! We look forward to a terrific 2010 together.

Happy Thanksgiving
We are so thankful for you! Check out the yummy treat we made in class today.
Edible “Indian” Corn
Ingredients
4 tablespoons of butter
4 cups of mini marshmallows
5 cups of puffed corn cereal
1 1/3 cups diced dried fruit (we used raisins, papaya, cranberries, and apricots)
Popsicle sticks
Fruit “Roll Up’s”
Instructions
In a microwave, melt butter and mini marshmallows over low heat (about 1 minute).
Remove the mixture from the microwave and use a wooden spoon to stir in puffed corn cereal and diced dried fruit. Allow the mixture to cool for about 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, cut out the fruit roll ups into leaf shapes.
Using buttered hands, shape each treat by pressing 1/3 cup of the mixture around a Popsicle stick. Add fruit roll up husks to the bottom of the ear, slightly moistening them to help them stick if needed. Makes 15 treats.

Silly Putty
This Friday was a really yucky Friday because we made silly putty. We put water in glue and stirred it up. Next we add food coloring to make it colorful and fun. Last we poured in borax and water. When we stirred it together it became a solid-y, liquid-y, gooey, kinda sticky blob of fun. Pictures soon to come!

Ooooooooobleck!
Dear Families,
We made a HUGE mess today. Guess how we did it – by making oobleck. Here’s what we did.
We put 2 parts cornstarch and 1 part water together. It felt soft. We realized that if you squeeze the oobleck it makes it a solid but when you left go of the oobleck it is like a liquid. We stuck our hands in the bowl and squished it. It was white, kind of gooey but it was hard at the same time. We think it is a mixture of solid and a liquid. Try it! It is fun!

Making Blueberry Muffins
Dear Families,
Today we learned about how to make blueberry muffins. We read a recipe. We put a mix in a bowl and added an egg and some milk. We had to stir it together to make a batter. Next, we poured the batter into the muffin tins. We put the muffin tins into the oven to bake. The temperature causes the liquid to change into a solid – a very yummy solid!
We had fun learning about (and eating) solids, liquids, and gases.
